Have you been having a good summer?
This summer feels so different to me, so surreal. There are days when I don’t even know that is is summer at all. Yet, the signs around me are that it is summering really hard. Let me explain.
The weather here in Boston is hot1, except when it is cold, and even on sunny days it feels gray.
The weather on the west coast and in the southwest is extreme and burning up the world.23
Billionaires are journeying into space and the Delta variant4 is spreading at a rapid pace. I keep trying to read science fiction5, but reality seems weirder.
So many people are on vacation. I keep encountering people on vacation. People taking two, three, and four weeks of vacation at a time. Releasing all the energy that a year of lockdown created.
My daughter and I took some vacation time in California at the beginning of July. We went to Disneyland. It was packed.
My wife and I had our baby shower last weekend, in small town Connecticut, and on our way to Rhode Island after were caught in the most torrential rain I have seen in years.
Maybe it is just me, but there is something off about the Summer of ‘21.
I do recommend Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Great fun hard science fiction.
