Last week, for no reason I can fathom, I dreamed of Maya Lin. One of those dreams where I was in conversation with her, but also clearly learning from her in some way. I awoke with this strong feeling that the dream was important.
To be clear, I do not personally know Ms. Lin, nor have I ever met her. But I have been an admirer of her and her work for a long time.
If you do not know of Maya Lin and her work, please check out her website. Read her stories, explore her works, understand her dedication to both craft and the larger world around us.
Read her beautiful and thoughtful book, Boundaries.
Visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial or the SPLC Civil Rights Memorial.
Art and architecture are important voices in the battle to preserve and protect our history and our future. The world around us is changing so rapidly, often so chaotically, that we lose our ability to be grounded. Lin’s work defies that, it grounds us in our environment and allows us to have perspective.
If I am attempting to do some post hoc analysis of the dream, it is a signal from my unconscious to my conscious mind to not lose sight of things, to not get swept up in the moment at the expense of the longer term. It is also to remember the power a single voice and vision can wield.
